A man was killed in a head-on crash on U.S. Highway 281 north of Lampasas Sunday night.
At about 7:55 p.m., 18-year-old Stephen Schutze of Cedar Park was traveling north on U.S. 281 about 10 miles north of Lampasas in a Ford Mustang when he lost control after he attempted to evade an oncoming white pickup, which tried to pass several southbound vehicles.
The car drifted off the roadway onto an improved shoulder and began to skid. It crossed the median before it slammed head-on into a southbound Dodge pickup, which was at the head of the line of vehicles that the white pickup was trying to pass.
Schutze was pronounced dead at the scene by Lampasas County Justice of the Peace Andy Garcia.
Bradley Drinnon, 23, of Oklahoma, who was driving the pickup, was flown to Scott & White Hospital, in Temple, by Stat Air ambulance.
Drinnon was conscious when he left the scene.
Autopsy has not been ordered by the judge, said DPS.
