A passenger died after jumping out of a van Monday afternoon in San Antonio.
The accident happened at about 2:45 p.m. on Loop 1604 near O’Connor Road.
A Ford cargo van driven by Vidal Martinez, 32, was heading east when the tire blew out. The driver lost control and went into the grassy median. The vehicle drew near the drop-off to the access road below, when the passenger, 29-year-old Joe Martin Salazar, opened the door and jumped.
Salazar plunged to the lower level and was immediately killed.
Martinez sustained minor injuries. He was wearing a seat belt and stayed in the van.
He was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle without a valid license and with having no proof of insurance.
Police said Martinez likely won’t face more charges.
