A 15-year-old Lyford High School athlete was killed Monday night in an ATV accident east of Lyford.

Eight girls were riding a 2012 Polaris Ranger Crew 500 all-terrain vehicle when apparently its right tires hit a patch of mud and caused it to rollover.

Gabriela “Gaby” Rivera died from her injuries sustained in the accident. Another 15-year-old girl was in critical condition.

State troopers reported that the other seven girls have already been treated and released for their injuries.

It was reported the girls had been working on a float for the homecoming weekend.

Lyford Consolidated Independent School District officials have cancelled the scheduled homecoming game against Progreso High School on Friday and all homecoming activities this weekend in light of the accident.

Rivera was a well-known athlete who played basketball, volleyball and softball for the school.
