An 11-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene after she was struck by a semi as she was sitting at a bus stop Monday morning in Texas City.
The incident happened just before 8 a.m. in the 2900 block of 26th Street where Christina Lopez waited for the school bus and a trucker, a neighbor, turned the corner, hit and killed her.
Texas City police spokesman Capt. Brian Goetschius said, “We believe she was sitting in the roadway, or partially in the roadway on the pavement itself, and he struck her and ran over her body. And he immediately stopped 50 feet from her body.”
The driver is cooperating with police and volunteered to undergo a blood test. Investigators believe the glare from the scene may have caused him to miss seeing Christina.
There were no other children at the bus stop area when the fatal accident happened.
Christina is a sixth grader at the Levi Fry Intermediate School where officials sent a letter home to parents to notify them of the accident so they could talk with their children about it.
