A 10-year-old boy was killed in east Harris County Tuesday after he was ejected from the car he was riding in. The accident happened when a Pontiac ran a red light along Highway 90 near Uvalde Road in the Channelview area and crashed into a Scion.
Maria Cornejo was driving the Pontiac, with her son Carmelo, riding in the backseat. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the boy was not fastened in a seatbelt and was pronounced dead on the scene.
Maria Cornejo was flown to Memorial Hermann Hospital. Her condition is unknown.
The driver of the Scion and a 3-year-old passenger were rushed to LBJ Hospital. The child was in a car seat and is expected to be fine.
Cornejo family members said the boy had a heart condition and were on their way home from a doctor’s appointment.
