A 23-year-old man caused serious wreckage early Saturday on Interstate 35 when he drove the wrong way and hit an 18-wheeler.
An off duty officer called a dispatch and informed that a car in the northbound lanes of the interstate near Walzem Road was heading south at around 3:15 am. The car struck an 18-wheeler driven by 23-year-old Abditfatah Jodah and injured his 29-year-old passenger Bashi Awale.
Officer Matthew Porter of San Antonio police said the collision caused the 18-wheeler to leak diesel fuel and catch fire. Interstate traffic was cut off in both directions until fire was contained and the leak was cleared out.
Awale and the wrong-way driver suffered minor injuries and were transported to San Antonio Military Medical Center for treatment.
The wrong-way driver is charged with driving while intoxicated.
