A local man was killed after he drove off US 59 South in Nacogdoches County and struck a candle shop on Tuesday.

The accident occurred at 10:55 a.m. five miles south of Nacogdoches. Bill Johnson, 84, was heading north when his 2003 Toyota Tacoma left the road, flipped and crashed into the side of a building.

Johnson was pronounced dead 2:20 p.m. at a Nacogdoches hospital.

According to the DPS report, he was wearing a seatbelt.

The owner of Fine Candles, Mary Douglas, said Johnson ran a watermelon stand close to the establishment. He and his younger brother Don have grown and sold melons and peas from the roadside stand for years on US 59.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday evening at Laird’s funeral home, followed by a service Friday morning.
