A 40-year-old Cedar Hill man was fleeing an Upshur County sheriff’s deputy when his car slammed into a concrete pillar underneath an overpass and died.
The deadly crash happened at 10:48 p.m. Monday at the intersection of U.S. 271 and Texas 155.
According to Gilmer Police Chief James Grunden, the Upshur County Sheriff’s Office had notified city police at 10:44 p.m. that a deputy was pursuing a speeding 2000 Mercedes which was northbound toward Gilmer on south Hwy. 155, and whose occupant was throwing something out the window.
A DPS Trooper laid down spikes to slow the fleeing car at the rural intersection of Farm-to-Market Road 2685 and 155, and the car travelled at a high speed rate of 138 mph past that point, Grunden said.
The driver, identified as Robert Dwayne Green, 40, crossed the intersection with 271 before crashing into a pillar to the left.
Green was pronounced dead at East Texas Medical Center — Gilmer at 11:55 p.m.
It was unknown what triggered the chase. No narcotics or illegal items were found in Green’s vehicle.
Investigation continues on the fatal accident.
