A Newton man was killed in Sunday’s five-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 27 just north of Sulphur near Houston River Road.

Preliminary investigation indicated that several northbound vehicles were stopped on Hwy. 27 at around 4 p.m. when a northbound 2000 Ford F-350 driven by Steven Horner, 36, of Westlake struck a stopped 2003 Honda motorcycle and slammed into a 1990 Ford F-150.

The F-150 rear-ended a 2000 Nissan Xterra fronting it and moved to the right side of the road. The F-150 continued forward hitting the rear of a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado and the multiple collisions finally came to an end.

Richard Nogle, 67, who was riding the motorcycle, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Calcasieu Parish Coroner’s Office.

All of the other drivers involved in the crash were wearing seat belts and each sustained minor injuries. They were identified as John Deville, 38, of Sulphur, the driver of the F-150; Samuel Yellott, 30, of DeQuincy, the driver of the Nissan; and Scotty Benoit,32, of Port Arthur, the driver of the Chevrolet.

Toxicology samples were obtained for analysis. Charges are pending against Horner.

The crash remains under investigation.
