An Amarillo man and his son were killed in a plane crash after leaving TAC Air in Amarillo on their way to Fort Worth on Friday.

Kelly O’Neal, a Colorado Springs, Colo. dentist and amateur pilot, and his passenger Robert O’Neal, 79, of Amarillo, were pronounced dead at about 9 p.m. after their plane went down in high winds near Claude.

Officials said at about 6 p.m., the 1974 twin-engine Beechcraft King Air disappeared from radar after stopping at TAC Air in Amarillo to pick up a passenger and crashed in a field about 20 miles southeast of TAC Air.

The aircraft crashed on a private property south of County Road 3 and Farm-to-Market Road 1258 in Armstrong County.

Friends said the O’Neals were heading to a concert in Fort Worth when the accident happened.

Robert O’Neal worked at Trans World Airlines and Great Western Directories before retiring.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.
