A collision of two trucks in Midland County on Tuesday left three men dead and one in critical condition.

Frank Ortega, 26, of Odessa, was driving a truck with two passengers when he tried to pass another car. He swerved to avoid hitting another truck driven by Manuel Loera, 47, but both drivers swerved in the same direction and collided head-on at about 7 a.m.

The two trucks landed in a ditch on FM 1788, about six miles south of Interstate 20.

Both drivers and Ortega’s passenger, Joshua Stearns, 27, from New Caney, were pronounced dead at the scene. Stearns was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.

Ortega’s other passenger, Jesus Carballo, 27, was transported to Midland Memorial Hospital and is listed in critical condition.

The three men who died were all oil field workers.
