Three fatalities and two injuries were reported on Friday’s head-on collision in Farm-to-Market Road 70 near Bishop.

The Department of Public Safety said the accident happened at about 11:15 a.m. when an eastbound 2003 Ford F-150 carrying four people crashed into a 2009 Mazda about four miles east of Bishop near County Road 73A.

The Mazda’s driver, Efrain Gomez Jr., 26, of Pharr, died at the scene.

Jose Luis Hernandez, 60, of Weslaco, the driver of the pickup and a passenger Santiago Granados Jr., 42, of Mercedes, were also pronounced dead on the scene. Granados was sitting in the back seat behind the driver, DPS said.

Two other passengers in the truck were transported by HALO-Flight to a hospital and are in stable condition.

Officials are still investigating the cause of the crash and if the occupants were wearing seat belts.
