College Park High School head football coach Richard Carson delivered some good news during the Meet the Cavaliers Night on Wednesday on the condition of the four football players involved in a rollover accident last Tuesday.

“We had a tough week here,” Carson said. “The great thing is that they are going to get through it. A couple of them are here tonight. And they’re going to get better and recover from that (accident).”

The teens were headed to practice in a sports utility vehicle around 6:30 a.m. when they crashed in the 18000 block of the I-45 northbound service road in Conroe. The driver was speeding when it passed a car in the far left lane of the service road and then immediately cut back to the inside lane. The driver over-corrected, causing the SUV to hit a concrete median and roll over at least three times.

An 18-year-old passenger was ejected from the vehicle. He was life-flighted to Memorial Hermann in serious condition. Lisa Meeks, spokeswoman for the Conroe school district, said he is expected to make a full recovery.

The driver, 17, and the two other passengers were taken to the hospital and were expected to recover.

Police said excessive speed and reckless driving were key factors in the single vehicle accident.

The recently licensed driver was cited for violating a state law that says drivers younger than 18 cannot drive with more than one passenger under age 21 who is not a family member.

The identities of the players involved in the crash were not released by the Conroe school district.
