A pilot was killed after a small plane he was flying crashed on Texas 21 near the Hays-Caldwell county line Thursday morning.

A small, twin engine aircraft took off early morning from the San Marcos Airport and crashed on its way back.

The pilot, identified as 66-year-old Clarence Schollmeyer from North Dakota, died on the scene.

Officials say he was doing a test flight on the double-engine plane when it crashed.

The accident happened at about 6 a.m. in a remote part of the Gary Job Corps Center located at 2800 Airport Highway 21 — an open field adjacent to the railroad. Part of the debris was burned, and some debris landed on Union Pacific railroad tracks, causing the railroad service to shut down for a short time.

There were no other people in the plane and no other injuries reported.

Fog and light drizzle may have contributed to the crash. The Department of Public Safety and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the accident.

Gary Job Corps center is a free education and career technical training program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor for people 16 to 24 years old, says its web site.
