A man was struck and killed by a flatbed truck as he tried to cross Interstate 35 in Waco Friday afternoon.

The accident happened at around 1:30 p.m. near the Forrest Street exit on the highway.

Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said a man tried to cross the northbound lanes of I-35 when he was struck by an 18-wheeler hauling a load of cars. Initial reports said several other vehicles struck the man after he was hit by the one-ton truck.

The victim, identified as Bobby Ray Gooden, 49, was transported to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center where he was pronounced dead that evening.

The northbound lanes of the highway were closed for a few hours as authorities cleared the scene.
