A head-on collision in Gonzales County early Saturday claimed the life of an 18-year-old San Marcos High School graduate.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said the two-vehicle accident occurred at around 6:15 a.m. on Highway 183, about 11.5 miles north of Gonzales.

Michael Burke, 25, was driving southbound in a 1999 Chevy S10 pickup with Andrew Chet Hamm,18, as a passenger. Both men from San Marcos were headed for work in the oil fields in Westhoff when a northbound 2001 white Toyota 4Runner, driven by Alice Ramos Segura, 50, of Gonzales, crossed the double yellow lines and collided with Burke’s truck head-on.

The impact of the crash killed Hamm.

Burke was injured and was taken to University Hospital in San Antonio by helicopter.

Segura was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.

The condition of the two victims was unknown as of press time. The investigation is still ongoing, according to DPS.

Officials of the San Marcos High School said counselors have been made available to grieving students.
